Hiroshima Video

The video on Hiroshima changed my thought about the atomic bombs. At first I felt that Japan deserved what they got for their attack on pearl harbor. After i saw this depressing video i felt that the bombs were not necessary. When i saw people suffering i could not imagine what they are going through. The pictures were extremely disturbing. Men and women with burns all over their bodies and no hair. When they showed the children with deformities or burns, thats when it hit me the most. Children should never deserve to have go through something like that. Its was not right of the United States to use the atomic bombs. The Russian infantry was already invading Japan and they would have surrendered if we invaded also.

Science and War

cience has come a long way from what it used to be. Today scientists can clone animals and even humans. It just comes to show that scientists never stop searching for something new to learn. They are always trying to improve the way we live. They create medicine for people who are sick or in need. But i think that the price of medicine is too expensive. If someone is sick or deeply ill and he/she cannot afford a certain medicine, what is that person supposed to do? Medicine needs to be cheaper so that less fortunate people can afford medicine.

The atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the first 2 to ever exist. Scientists created a new weapon of warfare that was far out of the ordinary. Pearl harbor encouraged the United States to use the A-bombs because of how many men and women were killed. It was our revenge on Japan for killing innocent people. We did exactly what they did to us, which was kill anyone in our path. I believe the Japanese deserved to be bombed because it showed the whole world that if you mess with the U.S, there is a huge consequence.

Environmental Problems

I believe that powerful countries, such as the United States, don’t know how to help developing countries. All the US does it send money, thinking that money is always the solution. The solution to helping developing countries is to provide them with education and to show them the way to live successful lives on their own. For example, I could give someone who has never fished before a fishing pole and a bunch of fish. Once the fish is gone how can that someone get more fish if he has not been taught. Its better to teach the person how to fish so that he can do it on his own. We need to guide countries in to living not so much like the United States, but to make things easier for them by providing them resources to help make the country stronger. Food is a great example to helping starving countries all around the world. So much food is wasted in the US and we need to make a solution to give starving countries as much food as possible. Education would also help developing countries alot because if civilians there are educated, they can find ways to live a better life and make things better for the country as a whole.

Queer Kids Say No

The University of Oregon is a very liberal school. There are gay couples all over campus. At times it is weird to see gay couples because it is unusual. But i believe that as long as they don’t harm anyone then they should be allowed to marry. Marriage is something everyone should have the right to do. Love is what brings people together and preventing that is something that should be taken in to consideration. The article talks about how the argument of gay marriage ignores the economic crisis and cuts. Its stating that we need to focus on more important things rather than preventing gay marriage. The article also states that queers are the new blacks. I agree with that statement 100 percent. They are not treated equally just because they like the same sex. I honestly don’t see the big deal in that. They are people just like everyone else and deserve the right to live a happy life. If gays were allowed to marry i think more and more comfortable with them. Its just because its unusual to see gay couples and thats why it such a big deal. We were not used to blacks hanging out with black people or going to same parks as them. But once they were allowed people started caring less and now the US is more peaceful. If gays were allowed to marry it would be something we would get accustomed to.

Never in my life would i have thought that Iraq was a wealthy and dominate country. When I think of Iraq now i think of oil and war. Its unreal how a country can completely change from being wealthy to being poor. Iraq is full of problems and America is over there to help solve them. Diamond talks about how the US dispatches troops wherever there are trouble spots or violent regime changes. America sends troops over to help third world countries because we have the resources to do so. America is the most powerful country in the world and we use our power to help others in need. Sometimes i think about when Iraqi’s kill our troops and i cant find the reason why. We are trying to help their country out and all they do is end up killing our troops. Honestly, if other countries who we are trying to help decide to kill our men i dont think we should help them anymore. If killing us is their choice, then lets give them the choice. Our men will leave and come back home where it is safe. The money we were going to help the country could go to improving schools or establishing universal health. We need to make use of our money and troops. If others aren’t willing to cooperate, they shall be helped no more.

Democracy

In America, we are allowed to state something whenever and whatever we want. But, majority is what guides our decision in to making the right ones? There are few people who stand out in the crowd and speak for their own means. DeTocqueville states,”you are free to think differently from me, and to retain your life, your property, and all that you posess; but you are henceforth a stranger among your people.” He is saying that people in the United States have their freedom and will do to certain things. Our decisions are always majority rule, never just one person. If there is one who does not agree with the majority, he or she is looked down upon. There are always times when i get the feeling that people would like to speak out against a leader or speaker. But they choose not to because they dont want to be looked down upon and be considered a “stranger.”

Breaking the rules…

Ever since i was a little boy i have gotten in to trouble many times. Sometimes when i got in trouble, i didnt mean to do it in a “breaking the rule way.” One time in elementary school i was on the bus on my way home. My bus driver was an asshole who could barely speak english. Sometimes on the bus i would get rowdy and loud, but i didnt know being loud just like all the other kids could get me in trouble. So after like warning to quiet down i did for a little while then picked up my loudness again. In the end i got a citation and ever since i always got in trouble with him. I got about 3 citations which made me go talk to the principal. She understood the whole situation and just made me take another bus home. Its better to break rules when you’re with your friends and your not the only one doing it. Its fun to break the rules when your with comfortable people and people you know you can trust. So it is good to break rules when you know theres risk but that risk is low and the situation that makes it risky is worth it. Everyone gets in trouble in their life no matter what. Its good to have experience with things because then it helps get a good idea of what to do and not what to do.

Justice

A super hero is someone who is brave and courageous to save peoples lives. There are so many super heroes that i don’t even know the names of all of them. Super heroes relate to justice by saving peoples lives and help the world out. They do many things that us humans are not capable of doing. Such as spiderman can reach really high places, or superman can lift really heavy things. In movies such as The Dark Knight, everything seems so real. Super heroes are not real but when i saw that movie, i didnt even think of batman as not real. I thought of him as a really big buff guy with certain skills to take down bad men. We have people that do the job for us today such as the police or military. They are considered our super heroes because they risk their lives for ours in a sense that only the brave can strong can do.

Journal Entry 3

Jimmy is a character from Oryx and Crake who watches porn and executions for his own entertainment. When he watches porn he doesn’t see the girls as girls, he sees them as “others” who just do favors. Same with the executions, Jimmy doesn’t really care that people are dying because he doesn’t know them. If he did know them he would most likely stop watching the disturbing videos and not consider them as others, but consider them as people. Later on in the story a character, in the porn video, looks Jimmy straight in the eye. The other isn’t an other anymore, she looks sad and miserable. His sympathy for her made him realize that she is a real person and not just some girl who does favors.

Box 6: “What will our soldiers think when they return to the University and find that they are expected to learn at the feet of a woman?” (Osen) Reworded: Soldiers are disciplined and taught with assertion, how are they going to learn anything from a woman who is weak.

In response to the Xanith, the life of a transvestite in Sohar sounds much more peaceful than in the United States. In the United States models are everywhere and people want to look like those models. Looking your best in the United States is an everyday thing. Everyone wants to feel loved and or attractive. Most transvestites probably don’t feel like they have beauty or can have the feeling of being loved. Transvestites have a choice either to be a woman or man. Usually they choose to be a woman and are also intimate with women instead of men. Xaniths are just treated as a third gender, and are not discriminated as they would be somewhere else. Xaniths choose to dress or act like woman because they feel more accepted. Men tend to judge people more than woman, because men always try to get with woman and appearance is the key ingredient.

In response to the Hijab story, I agree with Sultana in a way that we base many things on appearance that the value of someone is almost nothing. Its not fair to judge people based on appearance, but if you talk to that person and see who they truly are, then there is a reason. There were a couple of girls at my school who wore clothing that covered everything but their face. I didn’t think anything low of them, but i assumed they were wearing that clothing for a religious purpose. In the US today, men and woman try to look like the models or representatives they see on television or in magazines. Sultana choose to cover her body and face up because she feels more safe and isn’t ashamed of wearing something that represents herself. Everyone wants to look hot, but what it truly comes down to is the personality. At parties people always go out and drink, maybe even hook up with “hot” people. But i tend to choose the other option. I like getting to know people and finding out what they’ve done in their life. I love meeting new people and talking to them because they respect me more when i listen to what they have to say.
